Discover the Essence of the Pincushion

Pincushion Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2022 BundleHow a Unique Plant Inspires a Distinctive Sauvignon Blanc

Nestled on the southeast-facing slopes of Ben Lomond, amidst the unique terroir of sandy loam soils, lies the Single Vineyard site where the Pincushion Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc is crafted. This wine’s story is not just about its exceptional taste, but also about its deep connection to a remarkable plant species native to the region.

The Pincushion Plant: A Symbol of Unique Terroir

The Pincushion Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc owes its distinctive character to its vineyard’s location. This high-altitude site, cooled by the summer winds from the sea, benefits from an environment that’s as unique as the Pincushion plant itself. Named after the Leucospermum patersonii, or Silver-edged Pincushion, which is flowering right now, this wine pays homage to a vulnerable species endemic to the Agulhas region.

The Leucospermum, part of the Proteaceae family, is an iconic symbol of South Africa’s fynbos vegetation. This genus includes around 50 species, found across South Africa and northern Zimbabwe. The name “Leucospermum” translates to ‘white seed,’ are reference to the light-coloured seeds of many of these plants.

Nature’s Marvel: How the Pincushion Plant Thrives

The Pincushion plant has a fascinating relationship with the environment, particularly with ants. The seeds of the Pincushion have a fleshy coating called elaisomes that attract ants. These industrious insects carry the seeds to their nests, where they consume the elaisomes and leave the hard seeds behind. This process not only helps in seed dispersal, but also benefits the seeds by placing them in nutrient-rich environments.

The unique germination process of the Pincushion plant is triggered by fires, which are common in the region. The intense heat and smoke from these fires, along with the drastic temperature changes between day and night, stimulate the seeds to germinate. Late summer or early autumn fires are particularly effective, providing the heat needed for the seeds to break dormancy and sprout.

From Vine to Wine: A Taste of Terroir

Just as the Pincushion plant is intricately linked to its environment, the Pincushion Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc reflects the distinct characteristics of its terroir. The vineyard’s elevation, soil composition, and cooling sea breezes contribute to the wine’s unique flavour profile. This Sauvignon Blanc offers a taste that embodies the essence of the region—a true reflection of the land it comes from.

By naming the wine after the Leucospermum patersonii, Lomond celebrates the plant’s resilience and beauty. Each bottle of this wine is not just a drink, but a tribute to the extraordinary flora that thrives in South Africa’s fynbos.

So, the next time you savour a glass of Pincushion Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc, remember that you’re not just enjoying a fine wine—you’re experiencing a piece of South Africa’s natural heritage.

Cheers to the remarkable journey from vineyard to glass, and to the plant that inspired it all!
