FARM UPDATE

The onset of warm weather (finally and long may it last) is the signal for the vine to really start to push, bud break is behind us and the shoots are growing rapidly.

Suckering of the vines, all done by hand, is almost complete.

(Disclosure, over the last 9 years I have been repeatedly taught how to sucker, the theory is easy, but in practice, the detail is beyond me – it is a true skill which is hard learnt).

Suckering is the process of removing mainly non-bearing shoots (basically, unwanted and excess growth on the vine). This process ensures that the vines will be able to concentrate its energy and resources on the vital grapes. The process of shoot thinning also opens the canopy for airflow and sunlight penetration, essential ingredients to vine balance and fruit development and fertility in future years.

Every growing part of the vine is an energy sink, which means extra shoots or buds will take energy away from the business of growing and ripening the crop that we intended to develop.

Strong winds are not our friend at this stage so here is hoping for some calm weather.

Cheers!

Geoff

BIOBLITZ UPDATE

Feedback from the Walker Bay Fynbos Conservancy manager Jeanne:

“The event we held at Lomond Wine Estate at the end of September formed part of the Great Southern Bioblitz (GSB). I’m excited to share that the final results of the GSB have been announced.

The Overstrand region, which we’re proud to be part of, came in second place in the entire southern hemisphere, posting an impressive 14,553 observations of plants, animals, and insects. This highlights just how unique our environment is and how fortunate we are to live in a region so rich in biodiversity.

Our species count on Lomond is currently on 412, and we have only been at it for 6 weeks! “

WINE OF THE MONTH – MERLOT ROSÉ 2023

Our wine of the month is our Merlot Rosé 2023. Crafting the perfect rosé really is an art. Our winemaker needs to balance the visual component, aromatics and flavours. This process, of course, all starts in the vineyard. Our newly released 2023 vintage offers inviting aromas of strawberries and candy floss and presents a balanced, refreshing representation of Cape Agulhas Rosé. A perfect fit for summer!

Our offer to you to stock up for season, is to purchase 12 bottles for the price of 11. So that’s R1,210 for 12 bottles including free delivery to anywhere in South Africa.
