Replanting for the Future: A Commitment to Quality and Sustainability

This winter, we are removing almost 25 hectares of vineyard, including 8 hectares of Syrah, to make way for new vines that will ensure optimal yields for years to come. The decision to replant isn’t taken lightly; Syrah, in particular, thrives in our cold climate and is one of the best cultivars for this area. We know that by continually renewing our vineyards, we’re ensuring that Lomond’s wines will remain top-quality, year after year.

🌱 Why Replanting Matters

Vineyards naturally age, and older vines can start to produce lower yields. By replacing the old vines with new, we’re ensuring the vines are in their prime and capable of producing the highest quality fruit for our award-winning wines. Replanting is a key part of our strategy to maintain the sustainability and longevity of Lomond, keeping us always geared for optimal production capacity and preserving the distinct character of our wines. We’re confident that this investment in the future will only improve the wines you know and love.

🍷 A Future Full of Syrah

Syrah has long been a flagship cultivar for us, and we’ll continue to focus on it, ensuring we are producing wines that showcase the unique conditions of Cape Agulhas. The new Syrah plantings will result in even more exciting, expressive wines that reflect the best this terroir has to offer.

Stay tuned for updates as the new vines grow and develop!

Cheers,

Geoff

The mighty Cape Dune Mole Rat

📸Ronald Flipphi

Beneath the sandy coastal soils of South Africa, a little-known giant is hard at work. The Cape dune mole-rat, Bathyergus suillus, is not only the largest of Africa’s mole-rats, but also one of the largest truly subterranean mammals in the world, weighing up to 1.5 kg. Though it’s familiar to many by name, few understand just how extraordinary this solitary digger truly is.
