Monthly Newsletter – June 2025 edition

Farm Update

As you know, I love this quote from Winston Churchill:

“The only statistics you can trust are those you falsified yourself” – Sir Winston Churchill.

So let’s talk Syrah statistics.

Less than 0.7% of the total hectarage of Syrah vines in South Africa are planted in the Cape Agulhas Appellation.

76 ha out of 11 356 ha.

(It’s actually a bit less than that now, as we are removing 8 ha of older vines, more to follow in next month’s newsletter).

Shiraz SA Challenge

Top 12 Shiraz 2024: 2 of the finalists and 1 of the winners (the Lomond Conebush 2021, included in the bundle offer below) came from Cape Agulhas.

Over the past 6 years, there were 12 finalists and 7 winners.

Platter’s

Over the past 4 years, our Lomond Syrahs have won one 5 star and twelve 4½ star awards.

A consistency of excellence.

We believe that this extraordinary concentration of top performing wines is owing to our unique Cape Agulhas terroir and that the Cape Agulhas appellation has its place among the world’s top Syrah regions.

Syrah v Shiraz, are these the same wine?

Wine enthusiasts often encounter the terms “Syrah” and “Shiraz” when exploring red wines, but what exactly sets them apart?

From all of us at Lomond, stay warm, pour generously, and enjoy the season.

Cheers,
Geoff

Conservation – Buchu: The Soulful Scent of the Fynbos

There’s something quietly powerful about buchu. Not the kind of power that shouts for attention, but the kind that whispers ancient stories when the wind blows through the wild fynbos. Buchu isn’t just a plant – it’s a living thread woven through centuries of healing, ritual, and resistance. It’s one of South Africa’s botanical treasures, deeply rooted in both the cultural memory of its people and the ecological heart of the Cape Floristic Region.
