Farm Update

🌿 October at Lomond: A Season of New Beginnings

Our 2025 vintage Cap Classique is now safely in the bottle, beginning its slow and careful maturation journey to reach its elegant best. In the vineyards, bud break has begun, and we’re optimistic for the new vintage of grapes taking shape. Preparations for the new vintage are well underway, and as we step into the final quarter of 2025, the farm is alive with energy and anticipation.

We’re also enjoying a special visitor — a Spotted Eagle Owl nesting near the cellar. Keep an eye on our social media for reels from our camera.

Just in time for the lovely warm weather we’re enjoying, we’re happy to share the release of our 2025 vintage Merlot Rosé.

Born from the cool Cape Agulhas climate, this Merlot Rosé is playfully fresh and elegant, with hints of candyfloss and vibrant red fruit.

Your perfect companion for warm, sunny days.

Reforestation progress

We would like to thank those who ‘planted’ a tree using https://saforesttrust.com/plant-a-tree/.

79 trees have been donated and will soon go into the ground.

In addition, with the help of the team from Platbos, we’ve planted 90 new specimen trees, increasing the footprint of the Milkwood site.
Each tree strengthens this vital ecosystem, helping to protect biodiversity and preserve the unique natural heritage of our farm. We look forward to watching these young trees grow and thrive for generations to come.

Vegetation plot surveys

The Walker Bay Fynbos Conservancy has undertaken a follow-up round of vegetation plot surveys at Lomond. These surveys track natural regeneration and biodiversity recovery in areas cleared of invasive alien vegetation. Encouragingly 26 additional species were recorded – clear evidence of nature’s resilience and a reminder that our conservation work matters. Here is a pic of the Gladiolus gracilis, a graceful wildflower that brightens up our fynbos this time of year.

Here’s to growth, good weather, and great wine.

Cheers,

Geoff

Conservation –
Hidden gardeners of the Fynbos: The remarkable role of rodents in pollination and seed dispersal

The fynbos, an iconic South African shrubland in the Western Cape, thrives on fire, biodiversity, and an often-overlooked group of unsung ecological heroes: rodents. While everyone knows about the colourful birds and resplendent wildflowers, few realize how vital these small mammals are to the survival and renewal of this cherished habitat.

Until next month – we always welcome your feedback, so please contact us at office@lomond.co.za or 021 388 0095 if you have any questions or queries.
